My Alternator

Here are the short history of my alternator for both of my Hyundai's

Hyundai Matrix 2005, after clocking 140,000km had it's alternator replace on year 2014...that is a good 9 years.

I had it replaced with OEM alternator....until today it still running good..now clocking to almost 200,000km, 4 years after replacement of the alternator.

My Hyundai Avante X20 alternator fail on year 2018, 10 years of continuous driving clocking 166,000km. Now clocking 180,000km...the OEM alternator is working good.

The alternator on the left is from Avante X20 and on the right is from Matrix.
Earlier plan was to send them for  recondition, until today 3/12/2018..they are still in my safe keeping without doing anything....how time flies!!!.

Looking at above, I have to prepare an alternator for Matrix as back up.

Shell High Mileage Engine Oil 10W-40

My Hyundai Avante X20 2008 has clocked 179,891km, its due for its 180K km oil change. I was searching for the 5W-40 4L engine oil and every where was selling for RM200 - RM280. I missed the chance to buy a good offer by Giant Hyper for RM89.90 for a Shell 4L 5W-40.

I usually buy the Hyundai Eteer fully synthetic 6L 5W-30 for RM180.

So while scouting around a few petrol station, I found the Shell High Mileage Engine Oil 10W-40.. Fully Synthetic for RM154, so it should be good to last for 10,000km oil change. After oil change I notice the engine rev smoother and engine noise was also a lot quieter...I'm surprised !

No leakage after replacing the oil filter...that's a good sight...there was once the oil filter was not tighten properly ( many years ago),,,still can see on the right some stained..

Value for money

My Hyundai Matrix headlight has develop quite a bad haze. Driving at night is quite dangerous too.

It does not  happened overnight and usually car with plastic screen headlight will experience sooner of later. So I hit the DIY store and found this Waxco Plastic Lamp polish, costing merely RM7.40.

I follow the instruction and apply by hand...and surprised by it's outcome. Should I have use the orbiter could have been far more better result. But anyway this is acceptable, now I'm able to see one of the reflector has drop from it's  housing !

This is seen during day time, the headlight looks better.

Overall I'm very happy with this product.

Oh my Bendix !!!

On the year 2015 I had my front brake pad replaced with a pair of Bendix brake pad for Hyundai Elantra 2008 aka Elantra X20. I had my brake pad check this time around and what a surprised outcome.....thin down to the max!!

Lucky it did not reach the disc rotor or else it will an expensive repair.
I have the replacement set ready..off course it's Bendix again.

I'm very happy with grip quality of this brake pads...far far better than the original. There is also Bendix metal ..if you really really want a very very strong grip ( if you are always a fast driver). It cost me labour RM20 per side to replace the brake pads. The brake pad alone is RM140.

As approaching the 200k km on my Hyundai Matrix

As the car is getting old , more need to be done and careful maintenance as well. It's not yet breaking by pocket ..I hope not for another 10 years. I brought my own oil, its a Shell mineral oil. Intend to use on short term basis, next oil change I will use the semi synthetic...that would be somewhere next year  as my daily travel only 20km, rarely 60km.

The original Hyundai oil filter cost RM30 but the original Proton Wira 1.5 only cost me RM18. So far no problem , my foreman say he has fitted on many hyundai..no problem. I will change back to the original in the next oil change.

Had the gear oil change as well. I usually change the gear oil once every 2 times I change the engine oil.

Hyundai Matrix inner door handle replacement

In my 2014 posting I had the driver and rear right passenger inner door replace: http://ritzzuan.blogspot.my/2014/06/replacing-hyundai-matrix-inner-door.html until today both are working good.

And yesterday I had the left side passenger inner door handle replace. I use the spares I have, the OEM from Taiwan. Surprise that it can't fit in well. The screw not align with the hole. I have trouble mounting it and end up a broken bracket.

So I bought the original handle instead. The top piece is from Taiwan and bottom is the original from Korea ( RM45/pc )

The inner looks, the Taiwan looks flimsy but hey...what you pay is what you get!

The final installation, looks great !

I DIY the Hot Wheels clear plastic cover   and place each them on a wooden board. Have each of them stick with double sided tape. Hope you like the video li

Hyundai Matrix 1.6GLM 2005

My 13 years old Hyundai Matrix...still with original paint. May see a dent on the left fender near the front head light. A missing air spoiler at the rear passenger door ..in fact were ripped  away by strong wind. Fitted with 15 sport rim, instead of the standard 14 inch. Body kit made of PU...they are very reliable.

I like the big windscreen as well all the window glass...it feels very spacious.
The headlight need some polishing.

The day when the alternator fail on my Elantra

It happens without any warning...even I had fitted a voltage meter that will indicate the alternator failure, that is all it can do. Luckily the car was park at a shopping mall and not while on the move.

A day earlier, everything was good.. I always keep a look on the voltage reading 13.5-14V while on the move. The next day we drove to a shopping mall and after a few hours spending our time, it was time to go home.

Starting the car as usual, not a problem but the steering is heavy, very very difficult to turn, the air-cond refuse to switch ON and power window is dead. I did try to turn OFF and start the engine, the same result.

Looking at the dash meter .. while the engine was running, the voltage reading maintain 12.3V ( it is suppose to be showing 13.8-14V) , battery indicator light up, EPS light turn ON and that include brake light and ABS. I suspected this could be the alternator, I was worry failure of the EPS.

The car have to tow away to my regular workshop , it's impossible to drive.

At the workshop my mechanic have confirm, the alternator has fail and best to have it replace it.....option with  OEM alternator from Korea or Original. Difference in pricing almost RM400. I opted for the OEM.

This is not the 1st time experiencing alternator failure, it has happened on my Hyundai Matrix but able to detect while driving after a few days of driving, saw the voltage meter sign of reduction of charging current drop till 12V. I have it replace it with OEM alternator as well... it still works well till today.

New alternator for my 2007 Elantra on 23/3/2018 after reaching over166,000 km ! If time permitted , will send the old alternator for reconditioning and keep as spare.

Hyundai Matrix Air Cond Servicing 2018

The last service I did was somewhere in year 2013, yearly I only change the aircond filter. So on March 2018, the aircond begin to show sign of less cold air blowing out from its air vent. I have expected, the aircond must be service or else aircond compressor will be damage and more money need to be spend for a new or recond compressor. So from 2013 to 2018, that is 5 years period ... best to do it every 4 years.

The tips is: Once the aircond is less cold or none, do not turn on the aircond. Send the car to the aircond shop for check up.

I did the same thing here and they told me there was a slight leakage on the aircond compressor. While the aircond compressor was still able to pump, high chances it's still working. Only need to replace the seal and overhaul the compressor. Or else a new aircond compressor alone ( RM950 for new) not including other replacement item...all that might set be back about RM1500 !

The old aircond on the vice before overhaul. And after servicing, the shop give a good wash .

Here are the parts and pricing:

Lip Seal O-ring rubber + Compressor Oil - RM180
Freon Gas R134  - RM45
New Expansion valve - RM130
Drier Filter - RM65
Air cond Service - RM65
Labour - RM65
Aircond belt - Nil ( recently replace)

Total : RM550

Elantra X20 in the workshop

Have plan the Saturday 10/2/2018 for my elantra busy day with mileage at 162,090km on the odo.

Bought the necessary stuff, the rest will be from the workshop.

Radiator hose, time to change as the car is over 10 years. There are 3 hose, however only one shown and the 3rd hose is a smaller and short but the spare parts shop run out of stock. So make do whatever that is available.

New valve gears rubber gasket as to patch the leaks, original set cost me RM45

This is the spark plug seal, RM20 for 4 pc

Tming belt ( 90,000km spec) complete with auto tensioner, oil seals and bearing. This cost me RM280

Have extra coolant in stock.

This is the condition of the timing belt ...looks scary with visible crack. It's 90,000km specs, looks like better to change at 75,000 -80,000km.

New timing belt.

Next is the radiator hose, it's good that I wrap it with heat resistance foam sheet. Still looks good but after 10 years....it's better to change rather than facing with burst radiator hose out of no where. The old hose on the left. Only 2 hose was replace, 2nd hose not shown here and 3rd hose( bended and short) not replace as it was still flexible.

Coolant was also replace, 1/2 bottle into coolant  reservoir . And 1 bottle into the radiator.

Valve gear rubber gasket and spark plug seal . Now the engine looks cleaner.

Atf hose was also replace as the old one already hardened and leaking. That hose alone cost me RM50 !

ATF oil was also renewed with my own stock.

Total labur RM450 inclusive 6% GST

Hyundai Matrix new front tyre

Both front tyres in bad shape. Last replace was in 2014, Falken tyres. It looks scary with the thread linen is exposed. Money too was tight at that moment, waiting for the right time to change, lucky my Elantra was around. Finally with sufficient cash in hand...change both tyre to Falken as well.

The new Falken tyres. Hard compound and a bit noisy on the bitumen surface. However the ride is comfortable. Deep groove as I place my finger in between the water channel. Each tyre cost me RM140, its a 2017 tyre. Can use for the next 4 years.
